After 8 Years, Dutton Ranch’s Legacy Team-Up Is Yellowstone’s Most Exciting Evolution
Warning: SPOILERS for Dutton Ranch Season 1, Episode 6 - "A Cowboy Saint"Yellowstone has been a phenomenon for 8 years and counting, and Dutton Ranch introduces an alliance that's a long-awaited evolution for Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western universe. After the tragic failure of the Dutton Ranch, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) gain employment at the rival 10-Petals Ranch. Despite boasting a slew of unforgettable characters, from Beth Dutton to Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) to Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), Yellowstone has been primarily male-driven. Yellowstone traditionally centered on the patriarchs of the Dutton clan in different eras, starting with the late John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) in present-day Montana. Dutton Ranch upends Yellowstone's original formula, with Beth Dutton as co-lead with her husband, Rip Wheeler. Dutton Ranch introduced a compelling female antagonist in Beulah Jackson. The powerful matriarch of Rio Paloma's biggest ranch is essentially the female equivalent of John Dutton, who is more than a match for Beth and Rip.
Beulah & Beth Together Is Yellowstone’s Most Exciting Evolution
Dutton Ranch episode 6 marked the first big win of Beth Dutton and Beulah Jackson's business partnership, and it's a leap forward for Yellowstone. Together, Beth and Beulah represent the two most legendary ranching families in America, the Duttons and the Jacksons. Fittingly, Beth and Beulah scored their first client, millionaire restaurateur Zane Nash (Marlon Young).

6 Things Dutton Ranch Does Better Than Other Yellowstone Shows
Dutton Ranch breathed new life into Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone franchise and has made several improvements to the neo-Western saga along the way.
In a bold new vision for Yellowstone, Dutton Ranch's female leads achieve a big money deal together, powered by Beth's corporate sheen and Beulah's provocative family history. In contrast, the men of Dutton Ranch are back at the 10-Petals, branding Beth and Beulah's incoming shipment of black angus cattle. The cowboys stayed behind with the cows while the women brought home the bacon. In a way, Beth leveled up from her role in Yellowstone, where she was John Dutton's consigliere. Beth was beholden to her father's wishes and did his bidding, even when she knew he was wrong and lost her bid to see things her way. In Dutton Ranch, however, Beth holds equal footing with Beulah in business matters, though Jackson is still technically her boss. Meanwhile, Rip is once again ensconced in his role as a ranch foreman, tasked by Beulah to bring the 10-Petals bunkhouse and its infighting cowboys in line. For the first time in Yellowstone's 8-year run as one of TV's biggest franchises, women are calling the shots and holding the decision-making power in Dutton Ranch.
Dutton Ranch Already Hints That Beulah & Beth’s Alliance Is Doomed To Fail
Immediately after Beth and Beulah land their first millionaire client, Dutton Ranch teases that their alliance is already on borrowed time. While celebrating at a posh Chicago bar and comparing notes on raising teenage sons, Beulah jabs at Beth by hinting that she suspects the truth about Jamie Dutton's (Wes Bentley) disappearance.
Officially, Jamie Dutton, the former Attorney General of Montana, is missing after trying to kill Beth and being implicated in the murder of their father, Governor John Dutton. Only Beth and Rip, and likely Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), know the truth that Beth and Rip killed Jamie in Yellowstone's series finale. They banished Jamie's corpse to the Train Station, never to be found.
In Dutton Ranch episode 2, Beulah did her due diligence and researched Beth Dutton soon after they met. Jackson dropping the Jamie bomb on Beth in Dutton Ranch episode 6's climactic scene was a bit of revenge for how Beth showed off her own delving into the Jacksons' family history in Rio Paloma, which provoked Beulah into their business partnership. Beth and Beulah are an undeniable powerhouse combo and something Yellowstone has waited nearly a decade for, if they can keep business first and foremost. Dutton Ranch already factors in how precarious the Dutton and Jackson alliance is, and it remains to be seen how long Beth and Beulah's team-up will last.
