Swimming bans at popular Dublin bathing spots extended due poor water quality
A number of popular bathing spots in Dublin remain closed to bathers until at least Thursday due to poor water quality.Bathing prohibitions are in place at Blackrock Baths Shore, Corbawn Strand and The Forty Foot until June 11. The warnings are in place due to heavy and persistent rain over the weekend on into early next week and the increased risk of storm water overflows.Heavy rain can wash pollution into rivers, lakes and our seas and in some instances overwhelm sewage systems giving rise to the operation of storm overflows. Swimming after heavy rainfall is best avoided as it carries an added risk of pollution.Bathing prohibition means swimming is not allowed to protect swimmers’ health. They are put in place where a local authority has evidence that there is a high quantity of E coli or intestinal enterococci in the water.A number of bathing water prohibitions have also been lifted at the following locations. The swimming ban at Seapoint, which was due to be in place for a few more days, is among them. The lifted prohibitions include Coliemore Harbour, Dún Laoghaire Baths, Killiney Beach, Sandycove and Whiterock.Bathing water samples were taken on Tuesday 2 June, and more will be taken on June 9.Bathing Water Quality Results are as follows:Blackrock Baths Shore - PoorColiemore Harbour - ExcellentCorbawn Strand - PoorDún Laoghaire Baths - ExcellentForty Foot - PoorKilliney - ExcellentSandycove - ExcellentSeapoint - ExcellentWhite Rock - ExcellentWant to see more of the stories you love from Dublin Live?
