Cork couple's wedding ring lost for almost 40 years found in unexpected place

In the late 1980s, a wedding ring was lost by a Cork couple. It has now been returned to the couple ahead of their 50th anniversary next year, thanks to a house declutter and a Facebook page.John A. Murphy spoke to PJ Coogan on The Cork’s 96FM Opinion Line about how his late father found the ring in Cobh decades ago, only for it to sit forgotten in a box until last week. The ring was engraved with the names Madeline and Pat with the date November 26th, 1977.John posted the photo on a local Facebook page, and within two hours, a page administrator on holiday in Spain connected him with the family. He said: "So, it's now gone from Cobh to Cork to Spain, and it's now coming back around again, all via these Facebook messages.”The story took a crazy turn when John and Madeline realised their families were completely intertwined.Pat’s late father actually worked closely with John's father at the Irish Steel years ago.The ring is currently with John’s 90-year-old mother.Since Madeline had already bought Pat an identical replacement ring decades ago, John offered some advice for the couple's upcoming golden anniversary.John said: "I was saying to Madeline, Pat, you get the two rings valued now and see which one is the most valuable, you know, and cash in on the other one.”Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.
