Why you could soon be buying your shopping with a dolphin: Animals to feature on next UK banknotes

Shoppers could find themselves reaching into their pocket for a hedgehog or lending a dolphin to a friend under plans for new bank notes launched today.The Bank of England has revealed the 18 species that could become the images on £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes, replacing figures such as Winston Churchill.Members of the public can select up to two animals from three categories of wildlife: mammals, birds, and amphibians, insects and fish. The list includes the bottlenose dolphin, hedgehog, puffin, owl and frog.But the four animals with the highest responses may not all be selected, due to the need to be able to easily tell apart the design of each note. A decision is due by the end of the year.
