This is a follow-up to my diary from yesterday. ADAPTIVE INDOMITABLE UKRAINE: Russia Agonistes. Fewer “Meat Assaults”. Infiltrations Aren’t Working Either. Maybe The “New” 50 Year Old Battle Tanks Will Do It For Putin(?)
The Russian zagarbnikív(invaders) have tried just about everything to break Ukraine’s defenses, including throwing in the proverbial kitchen sink(most of the real ones they stole from Ukraine were shipped home to Russia). So far none of it has worked at a scale sufficient enough to garner the strategic breakthrough they’ve sought in well over four years of unbridled and unconscionable levels of brutality and depredation against Ukraine. Their latest and greatest idea of sneaking small units of infiltrators and saboteurs between and behind Ukraine’s chronically under-manned lines, initially yielded some success. After over a year of trying, the Russians managed to create a narrow corridor of infiltration into the southern part of the city of Pokrovsk, which the Ukrainians took to calling “the sausage” because of its shape on maps.
Despite devastating losses in equipment and personnel, the Russians doggedly pushed forward and eventually established a level of concentration by which they could actively fight for the inner city of Pokrovsk. The rubble that is the inner city of Pokrovsk is now in Russian hands. But to date, they haven’t gotten past the Ukrainian defenses ranged up on the high grounds in the suburban areas west, north and northeast of the city. The battle for Pokrovsk is as hot as it has ever been. The Russians have repeatedly tried to break out using armor towards Hryshyne in the northwest of the city. Result? Total defeat and devastation.
And they tried the same tactic against the other critical northeast Donetsk oblast defensive linch pin at Lyman. Same tactic, same result:

In the Lyman sector, the Russians sent heavy armored vehicles to storm the area, which entered the zone of operation of Ukrainian drones and artillery.
The 3rd Army Corps reported that the military thwarted the attack and destroyed the column.
The enemy’s armored vehicle column was detected in the 3rd Corps’ area of responsibility. After that, it was struck by drones from the Kraken unit.

So it is now back to infiltration and sabotage. Again! But ADAPTIVE INDOMITABLE UKRAINE seems to have now come up with the means to counter it:

Ukraine has managed to adapt to the infiltration tactics used by Russian occupation forces on the battlefield, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) wrote on May 11.
In early 2025, Russia changed its tactics, relying on infiltration by small assault groups. The occupiers seize specific pieces of territory—sometimes just a section of a forest strip or the basement of a ruined building — and then wait for reinforcements to launch further attacks, the WSJ explained.
In this way, the Russians take advantage of Ukraine’s personnel shortages.
However, the author of the article noted, Ukraine has managed to adapt, using drones and artillery to destroy these enemy assault units, as well as detecting occupiers who manage to break through.
“The Ukrainian method has proven precise and lethal,” the WSJ wrote, citing a video published in February as an example.

Note: The original WSJ article which NV(The New Voice of Ukraine) excerpted … “He Was Missing Part of His Arm. Russia Sent Him Into Battle Anyway. Putin is struggling to achieve his war aims despite tens of thousands of Russian soldiers being killed or wounded each month” is is behind a pay wall.
ADAPTIVE INDOMITABLE UKRAINE, as Russia has FAFO’d, knows a lot about precision and lethality. And they will continue to scale up … exponentially. Ukraine’s VICTORY on the battlefield is now a mere question of when Russia eventually finds a way to cry uncle.
