The Punisher: One Last Kill Ending Explained: What's Next For Frank Castle

Warning! This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for The Punisher: One Last Kill.Marvel's Special Presentation, The Punisher: One Last Kill bridges the gap in Frank Castle's story as we see Frank struggle with the consequences of his vendetta, but what's next for The Punisher in the MCU? Jon Bernthal has been playing Frank Castle for a decade now, since he debuted in Netflix's Daredevil. However, his MCU debut came in 2025, when he appeared in Daredevil: Born Again season 1. And despite Daredevil: Born Again season 2 seeing Matt Murdock pull together a small army of vigilantes to help take the city back from Mayor Wilson Fisk and his brutish AVTF agents, The Punisher has been remarkably quiet. Thankfully, The Punisher: One Last Kill explores what was keeping Frank so busy while the rest of New York was in disarray. Why Was Frank Castle Hallucinating In The Punisher: One Last Kill? Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle surrounded by ghosts of Marine Corps soldiers in The Punisher_ One Last Kill The Marvel Netflix shows did a tremendous job of exploring how Frank Castle has been dealing with life since the tragic deaths of his wife and young children. As a highly trained Marine Corps operative, Frank had all the skills he needed to hunt down the people responsible for destroying his whole world, and he set out on a comprehensive mission to hold everyone responsible to account. While his ultra-violent tactics were an affront to the more morally conservative Matt Murdock, who chose to resist crossing the line to kill his enemies, Frank never faltered in his mission, and he continued to pile bodies high as he systematically took out dozens of targets who held even the loosest connection to ordering the murders of his family. However, after all the bloodshed, it seems as though Frank has got some demons of his own. Throughout The Punisher: One Last Kill, Frank sees former Marine Corps allies, his wife and children, and Karen Page. All of these are hallucinations conjured up in Frank's mind to both punish and preserve him. And ultimately, these ghosts of his past help him to come to terms with who he is and what his purpose will be going forward. Did Ma Gnucci Escape & When Could She Return? Marvel Studios The Punisher: One Last Kill revolves around an incident where Frank's last series of kills, having eliminated the majority of the Gnucci crime family, leads to him having a conflict with Ma Gnucci, the widow and mother to several of Frank's final targets. Ma Gnucci is a character directly lifted from the pages of the comics, and her story plays out in a remarkably similar way. And it seems that as much as this special helps to give Frank a foundation in the MCU, it also offers the origin for this character, who will likely serve as his rival in upcoming Punisher stories. While she appears to be a relatively feeble woman in a wheelchair who can't directly cause harm to Frank, her access to wealth and connections within criminal circles means she could send a neighborhood of New York into chaos with a target and a bounty on Frank Castle's head. With that, it seems highly likely that this is not the last time that Ma Gnucci will be seen in the MCU. How Does The Punisher: One Last Kill Connect To Spider-Man: Brand New Day? Punisher One Last Kill Star Jon Bernthal As Frank Castle in Spider-Man Brand New Day. While Jon Bernthal was confirmed not to be appearing in Daredevil: Born Again season 2 months ago, he was announced to be making the leap to the big screen with a major role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. In the trailers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's clear that Frank is playing an anti-hero role, as he takes aim at Spider-Man and appears to be on a mission of his own. With The Punisher: One Last Kill confirming that Frank has killed everyone he set out to in his mission to avenge his wife and children, it is now clear that he has one last rival that he may be hunting in Ma Gnucci, but he is also inclined to step up and fight against other criminals on behalf of other people who have been wronged. While Ma Gnucci hoped to rid herself of Frank Castle and avenge her own loved ones, she has accidentally sparked a new desire in him to deliver punishment to any and all whom he deems deserving. This is seen in his efforts to protect a young girl named Charli and her father, and his final acts in the special, where he kills the man who murdered an unhoused man's dog. Evidently, Frank Castle has now embraced his identity as The Punisher, and he is more than ready to step in when injustices happen. So, with several major criminals set to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Punisher has his hands full of new targets to bring to justice. Unfortunately, this will also put him on a collision course with Peter Parker's web-head, who tends to lean more into Matt Murdock's idea of justice, where heroes cannot cross the line and kill criminals, despite the terrible wrongdoing that they are involved in. All of that said, there is hope that they can find a way to work together, despite the gap in their ideologies. Is There A Post-Credits Scene In The Punisher: One Last Kill? The Punisher: One Last Kill is a largely self-contained story that appears to be separate from what is happening in Daredevil: Born Again, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the wider MCU, despite bringing Frank Castle to the point where he is now ready to fight others and cross paths with other heroes and vigilantes in New York. As such, the Marvel Special Presentation has avoided including a post-credits scene. This is a story that is very much on the ground level, and it doesn't try to lead into or pull attention away from what happened in the condensed runtime. This appears to be an increasingly common choice in new MCU projects, as films and shows rarely include post-credits scenes to the same level that the Infinity Saga implemented them. However, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day coming out on July 31, a little over two and a half months after The Punisher: One Last Kill, fans won't have to wait long before they see what is next for Frank Castle as The Punisher. Though where these street-level stories are all heading remains a mystery, while other major events play out for the various superhero teams of the MCU, who are set to collide in Avengers: Doomsday.
