A statement from the force in the UAE city said that "specialised teams immediately launched intensive search and surveillance operations" after receiving "a judicial file from Irish authorities detailing the suspect's alleged crimes and his involvement in an international criminal organisation".A warrant was then issued for Mr Kinahan's arrest by Dubai Public Prosecution. He was arrested on Wednesday, April 15 - less than 48 hours after the warrant was issued.The shocking news broke on Friday afternoon. Gardai, who have not officially named Kinahan as the individual taken into custody, confirmed in a statement to media that a man in his 40s had been arrested in Dubai.It is understood the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that Kinahan be charged in relation to directing a criminal organisation. The direction comes after an extensive and meticulous investigation by gardai that culminated in the file being sent over two years ago.Sources say he will now be put through the court's process in Dubai and is being held at a prison in the area until a hearing in the coming days. He is expected to challenge his extradition, which will likely mean the process will go on for several months.Kinahan is entitled to a legal team and to challenge the extradition, as did Sean McGovern. If successfully extradited he is expected to be charged on arrival in Dublin with directing a criminal organisation. The charge carries a maximum of life imprisonment.Senior Cartel member McGovern, who last summer became the first person to be extradited to Ireland from the United Arab Emirates, pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court to directing a criminal organisation in March.
