Crayon: How family, industry pressure led to my hospitalisation
Crayon, the Nigerian singer, has detailed his past mental health struggles and how he overcame them.
During a recent livestream with content creator Cater Efe, the artiste opened up about a difficult period in 2022.
The singer described being crushed by pressure from both his family and the music industry.
A now-viral clip from the session shows him explaining that the stress became unbearable, leading to a lengthy hospitalisation for an extended period, after which he returned with hit songs ‘Labalaba’ and ‘Overloading’.
“In 2022, I had mental health issues from all sorts of stress — family, industry, trying to be number one,” he said.
“I was hospitalised for a long therapy session, then I came out and dropped ‘Labalaba’ and ‘Overloading’.”
This isn’t the first time the singer has discussed his mental health journey. In 2024, he shared that he had been admitted to a psychiatric hospital due to depression.
He traced the roots of that depression back to 2020, when his songs failed to gain traction. The disappointment affected him deeply, causing him to “act out” before he was eventually hospitalised.
Earlier, in 2023, Crayon had also spoken about his struggles with the pressure of not gaining admission into a higher institution like his peers, an experience that further compounded his mental health challenges.
Last month, Crayon went on a ranting spree on X, calling out the leadership of Mavin Records.
