Canada invests $10.6 million in EV charging infrastructure
The initiative, presented by Natural Resources Canada at the EV & Charging Expo in Toronto, aims to deploy more than 1,600 new charging points. The projects include a mix of Level 2 and DC fast chargers and will be implemented across multiple provinces, including Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island.Among the larger projects, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority will install a total of 262 chargers, including Level 2 and Level 3 units, while Cogir will deploy 981 Level 2 chargers in Quebec. Additional investments will support fast-charging infrastructure in central Ontario and public charging installations in urban and regional locations. The funding builds on the recently announced ‘Auto Strategy,’ with which the Canadian government earmarked $97 million in funding for 155 clean transportation projects across the country. Of the total package, $84.4 million will support 122 projects under the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP), enabling the installation of more than 8,000 new EV charge points from coast to coast to coast. In parallel, the government is allocating a further $1.1 million to support an electric vehicle education initiative led by Plug’n Drive. The programme will extend a national test drive tour designed to increase awareness and adoption, particularly in smaller and medium-sized communities.Karim Bardeesy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, announced the funding on behalf of the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson. “With today’s announcement, we are investing in EV chargers where Canadians need them most in Toronto and beyond, making it easier for drivers to get to where they live, work and play. This is how we build a strong and climate-competitive future,” Bardeesy stated. The projects are funded under Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which supports the deployment of EV charging and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure nationwide. Since 2016, the federal government has invested more than $1.2 billion in charging and refuelling infrastructure.canada.ca (announcement), canada.ca (projects)
