Finn Wolfhard’s First Official New TV Series Appearance After Stranger Things Explained By Malcolm In The Middle Creator
Finn Wolfhard has officially left Hawkins behind for Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair revival series. 20 years after Malcolm in the Middle ended, Frankie Muniz is officially back in the role of Malcolm at the epicenter of a dysfunctionally hilarious family, but this time he's the grown-up. The revival miniseries reunites some of the original cast, including Bryan Cranston, Justin Berfield, Christopher Masterson, and Jane Kaczermarek. Now, they've even added a superfan to the mix, and Wolfhard is ready to take it on.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, creator Linwood Boomer and producer Tracy Katsky reveal some behind-the-scenes gossip from the long-awaited return to Malcolm in the Middle in Life's Still Unfair. Wolfhard's appearance was a major life achievement for the actor, as a huge fan of the original series, and after wanting to simply visit the set, he landed a cameo that had everyone talking as Boomer and Katsky reveal how it really happened.
Tracy Katsky: Isn't that great? Can I just tell the story, because it's so funny and weird. So we got a call from Finn Wolfhard's manager where he said, "Finn is a really big fan of the show. Can he come and visit the set?" And we were like, "Yeah, he can come and do a part." And the manager was all excited, and he was all excited. So, we figured out what it was. And when he was on set, his first day, he went in and his first scene was one of the scenes with Jane [Kaczmarek], and Jane was yelling at his character, and he was like, "I forgot I'm supposed to be acting. I forgot I'm supposed to be acting." [Laughs] And he was such a cute —
Linwood Boomer: Yeah, he was like, "Lois is yelling at me!" [Chuckles]
Tracy Katsky: He was such a fan of the original show that he was sort of going one-to-one with Linwood. And we had a lot of the OG folks there, like Ken Kwopis directed a bunch of the originals, and Alex Reed, who I think was starting halfway through season 1. There was just a lot of people there. And Finn would be like, "Well, in season 5, episode 17, when this happened and this happened," and everyone's just like, "We don't remember that at all." [Laughs]
Linwood Boomer: [In a faux tone] "Yeah, we remember that too."
Wolfhard was clearly showing how much of a die-hard fan he is on set and clearly left an impression on the cast and crew, as it marks his first major television role since his decade-long stint on Netflix's Stranger Things as Mike Wheeler.
Tracy Katsky: It was so cute! We were so charmed by him. He was just an absolute doll, and we were so grateful he was willing to do that.
ScreenRant: Oh, I'm glad that you were able to pull that off because it was such a fun little treat to see. And it felt so different from anything that he's really played before that I was like, "Oh, I like that." He's getting to be a little bit of a weirdo.
Tracy Katsky: And he's so funny. He hasn't done things to show that he can be funny. So, we were happy for him, too. It's a nice little window into what that actor can do. It's really cool.
Wolfhard's first TV stint since Stranger Things is setting him on the path for life post-Hawkins. The actor has stated he wanted to become more dedicated to his band, The Aubreys, and focus on more of his musical pursuits. He's also known for his roles in 2017's It and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. He has one upcoming project as a voice actor in the TV series New-Gen.
