British tourists ditch popular holiday spot and key issue stops them visiting

As the holiday season approaches, many people are beginning to plan their getaways; however, reports suggest that Brits are starting to turn their backs on a popular destination. Eerie footage has emerged showing deserted airports at the holiday hotspot, and it has sparked considerable debate among travellers. Videos of such scenes have gone viral on TikTok, with one tourist capturing an airport that appeared completely empty. Despite being only the start of the season, he noted the airport resembles a "ghost town", with unsettling footage revealing just how subdued things are at the travel destination. It isn't the first time the topic has been addressed either. Previously, people also admitted the hotspot has turned into a ghost town due to a key issue. Reflecting on the scenes he witnessed in Turkey, dadhealthandtravel wrote: "I get it's only March, and the resorts are just starting to get busy ahead of the season starting, but I have NEVER seen Antalya Airport this quiet. Through check-in, passport control and security in under five minutes. "For anyone curious, it's hot, and getting hotter by the day! Currently around 23 to 24 degrees mid-afternoon." The video has been viewed thousands of times, with dozens of people swiftly commenting. One wrote: "It's so expensive." Another added: "That place is a rip-off." A third replied: "We left from Antalya Airport last week and it was the quietest I'd ever seen it." Meanwhile, a fourth also remarked: "This is true. When we arrived two days ago it was like a ghost town." One more also simply stated: "It's too expensive." However, others acknowledged they've visited recently and a different picture was painted. One person observed: "It's not the season yet, so most flights are not flying." Another chimed in with: "We arrived on Monday and there was many people." One more also added: "Flew back from Antalya yesterday. It did seem quiet, but had the best week out there." Why has it become expensive? Over recent years, numerous people have reported that Turkey has become pricier. There are thought to be several reasons for this. A significant factor is the severe inflation and the rapid devaluation of the Turkish Lira. In recent years, it's said to have quickly declined in value. Steep operating costs, soaring demand in tourist spots and hefty taxes on imports have also eroded its former reputation as a "cheap" destination. As a result of instability, businesses frequently raise prices to cover anticipated future costs, a practice that has triggered a massive surge in prices. Not to mention, substantial taxes are applied to imported goods, electronics and alcohol, making these considerably more expensive than in other countries. There are some cheaper areas to visit though. Whilst tourist areas in major cities such as Istanbul are now costly, budget-friendly alternatives, such as dining in local neighbourhoods or visiting during off-peak periods, remain available. There are methods to try and navigate around it.
