Who Plays Katie In ‘Rooster’? Meet Charlie Clive

Rooster, HBO’s highly-anticipated new comedy, has finally arrived. And with Bill Lawrence as co-creator, Steve Carell as leading man, and Allison Jones as casting director, we can expect another impressive ensemble cast and a stacked lineup of guest stars. The college campus-set series follows the relationship between bestselling author Greg Russo (Carell) and his professor daughter Katie (Charlie Clive). Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai also star. And big names from Connie Britton to Alan Ruck appear throughout the first season. But as Decider noted in our full Rooster review, the show’s success heavily hinges on the cohesion and charm of Clive and Carell’s characters. And Clive, absolutely shines alongside The Office star. So who is Katie in Rooster? And what do we know about Charlie Clive, the actor who plays Katie in Rooster? In honor of Rooster‘s March 8 premiere on HBO and HBO Max, read on for a breakdown of Katie’s character, more information on Clive’s pre-Rooster career, and quotes from Decider’s interview with the Rooster star. Who Is Katie On Rooster? In addition to being Greg’s daughter, Katie is a professor at Ludlow College and the wife of fellow professor Archie (Dunster), who cheats on her with a grad student named Sunny (Tsai). As noted in Decider’s review, Greg visits the liberal arts college as a guest lecturer, but he accepts the gig with an ulterior motive. He wants to check on Katie, who’s understandably spiraling. And when Ludlow’s president (McGinley) reveals her job is at risk due to erratic behavior, Greg reluctantly agrees to extend his gig for the semester to save her career. Clive plays Katie’s messiness, impulsivity, and raw emotions with ease, stealing scenes and evoking a balanced mix of empathy and laughter from viewers. The real-life experiences of Girl Dads Lawrence, co-creator Matt Tarses, and Carell helped shape Rooster’s anchoring duo, but Clive’s effortless chemistry with Carell is what makes each interaction feel authentic, regardless of tone. And on our very first table read, I saw Steve and I was like, ‘Oh my god. I’ve got to go talk to Steve Carell. And instantly it felt it felt a little bit scary and then completely fine,'” Clive told Decider over Zoom. “When we finished the table read, we both had to get in a buggy somewhere, and I said, ‘Oh wow, this is so cool. I’ve never been on a lot before.’ We were filming on the Warner Brothers lot, and Steve was like, ‘Wait, you’ve never seen it? Oh my god! I have to show you around.’ So he sort of commandeered the buggy. I was wowed about everything. And I think Steve was enjoying seeing it through my eyes.”  “It was instant. Even on Zoom, I could tell, ‘Oh that’s her!'”Steve Carell, Rooster Carell told Decider the father/daughter chemistry was “instant” for him. “Even on Zoom, I could tell, ‘Oh that’s her! That’s her! I love it!’ We felt so comfortable right from the start. I think part of that was a sense of trust as actors. I was going to support anything she chose to do. And I felt the same way about her.” While we wait to see more of Katie and Greg’s dynamic on Rooster, let’s learn more about Clive’s career. Who Plays Katie In Rooster? Meet Charlie Clive Katie is played by Charlie Clive, a 33-year-old British actor and comedian with a downright fascinating career trajectory. She also stars in the upcoming comedy thriller, Everybody Wants to F*ck Me, alongside Taron Egerton. But Rooster is her first American TV role, and is sure to serve as a big breakout.
