What Happens At Night has won the battle of potential Martin Scorsese projects, as filming gets underway at last on his new fiilm.
After wrapping up duties on his 2023 epic Killers Of The Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese insisted he was keen to ‘get back out there’ and tell another narrative story. And yet it’s taken until February 2026 to get cameras rolling again.
The film in the end that bubbled to the top of his list is What Happens At Night. First announced as a film project for Scorsese back in April 2023, it’s based on the novel by Peter Cameron, with Patrick Marber adapting it into a screenplay.
Production is now underway in Prague on the film, with a hell of a cast. Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio (who goes straight onto Michael Mann’s Heat 2 after this), Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris and Mads Mikkelsen are all confirmed so far. More names will likely be revealed in due course.
At various stages over the past few years, Martin Scorsese has been set to direct a relatively short film about Jesus Christ, a presumably much longer one about Frank Sinatra, and then there was the Hawaii-based gangster film that had Dwayne Johnson all lined up for a key role. There was also a film called The Wager, that DiCaprio was going to start in. It’s not that those other films aren’t going to happen (well, he ain’t going to make all of them) but they’ve clearly been relegated down the list a little.
What Happens At Night is likely to fill Martin Scorsese’s diary until at least the middle of next year, possibly longer if it then gets an awards run. After that, it looks like he’s got enough projects on the stove to be able to move another one relatively quickly. But, in fairness, I’ve thought that before.
More on What Happens At Night as we hear it. A 2027 release for it is likely.
