Prince William and Princess Kate heckled over monarchy on BAFTAs red carpet amid Andrew scandal
Prince William and Kate, Princess of Wales, found themselves at the centre of an awkward moment about the future of the monarchy as they attended the BAFTAs in London.
On Sunday night, the Prince and Princess of Wales stepped onto the red carpet for the glittering film awards. But while the cameras flashed and the glamour flowed, there was no escaping the cloud hanging over the royal family.
It comes just days after William’s uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested on February 19 on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The exact details of the allegations remain unclear, and he has since been released under investigation.

Prince William and Princess Kate face monarchy question at BAFTAs
As they made their way along the red carpet, a reporter was heard calling out: “Your Royal Highnesses, is the monarchy in peril?”
Whether they heard the question is unclear. If they did, they chose not to respond, continuing down the carpet without acknowledging it.
The moment came just days after Andrew’s arrest prompted a public statement from King Charles. It is widely believed the Prince and Princess of Wales were supportive of the message.
In his statement, the king made his position plain, saying of the police: “In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.”

Prince William admits he’s ‘not in a calm state’
There was also a more personal moment from the Prince of Wales during the evening. At the BAFTAs, he made a candid admission amid the family turmoil.
According to reports, William revealed he has not yet watched the 2025 film Hamnet, which dramatises the life of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway as they cope with the death of their young son.

He explained: “I need to be in quite a calm state and I’m not at the moment. I will save it.”
The comment offered a rare glimpse into the pressure he may be feeling, coming just days after his uncle’s arrest in Sandringham.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor arrest
Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office last Thursday.
Scrutiny has been building for some time over Andrew and his links to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Last month, the US Department of Justice released more than three million files relating to the disgraced financier.
Following that release, Andrew faced allegations that he shared sensitive and confidential documents with Epstein during his time as a UK trade envoy.
He served in the role between 2001 and 2011. In 2010, according to emails contained in the files, Andrew allegedly forwarded official reports from trade visits to Epstein.

Under official guidance, trade envoys are required to maintain confidentiality over sensitive, commercial or political information.
We previously contacted representatives for Andrew for comment on the allegations.
Andrew has always denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. His recent arrest should not be interpreted as any indication of guilt, and no charges have been brought.
