MG Motor delivers its one millionth new car in Europe - car and motoring news by CompleteCar.ie
MG is celebrating a major milestone, as it confirms that it has just delivered its one millionth new car in Europe.
That's amazing, but when is MG counting from?
Good question, and we'll come back to that in a moment, but it's certainly a moment for the brand to celebrate, as it has become one of the most successful Chinese brands in Europe and Ireland - albeit a Chinese brand that's using a classic and well-known badge.
How many of those sales were EVs?
According to MG, of those one million cars, 317,000 were powered by batteries, with the MG4 EV hatchback proving to be a notable success, one that MG will be hoping to capitalise on, with the launch of the new, more affordable MG4 Urban (and you can read more about that car here).
What other types of MGs are big sellers?
MG is also celebrating its hybrid-engined cars, and noted that in 2025 its hybrid models racked up an impressive 139,000 sales.
Overall, in that one million sales, the MG ZS has been the biggest-selling model across two (well, three if you count the significant 2020 facelift) with 424,000 sales in total.
In 2025 alone, MG reached a major target of shifting some 300,000 cars in Europe, with MG's Guy Pigounakis saying: "Despite ongoing challenges across Europe that continue to influence new vehicle sales, MG has delivered consistent and sustainable growth. Reaching a milestone of 300,000 sales before the end of 2025 clearly demonstrates that our product range resonates strongly with customers - offering the right combination of design, technology, quality and accessibility. With more exciting new models scheduled for launch in early 2026, we are confident that MG will continue to expand customer choice and strengthen its position across European markets.”
Let's circle back to that 'when they're counting from' bit…
Indeed. This one-million figure is essentially counted from 2011, which is when the revived and re-built MG brand - which in its original form had collapsed in 2005 as part of MG Rover Group - returned to European markets, initially in the UK.
However, as modern MG notes, the brand itself is far older, and actually celebrated its 100th birthday in 2024, which the company marked with the launch of the gorgeous MG Cyberster electric roadster.
Combining 'modern' MG with the MG Rover Group era, and with the 'classic' MG era that ran from 1924 to 1982, changes the picture rather a lot. 'Classic' MG sold more than half-a-million versions of the MGB in roadster and GT coupe forms, for instance, while MG Rover, between 2000 and 2005, still had significant sales of its MG-badged models, in spite of it never being quite enough to save the company. Put those figures together, and you're probably looking at total MG sales over 101 years of closer to 2.5 million.
What's coming next?
Some really significant launches are coming up for MG. The new MG4 Urban hatchback, as well as a significantly updated MG4 EV, arrive in Ireland shortly, as does the new MG6 EV - a rival to the likes of the Skoda Enyaq and VW ID.4. Then there's the potential expansion of MG's semi-premium 'IM' brand - which hasn't arrived in Ireland yet (blame EU tariffs) but which may yet come here - and the potential for the 'CyberX' sub-brand, which was shown off in the form of a rugged Land-Rover-like electric 4x4 last year. And then there's the utterly gorgeous MG Cyberster GTS coupe, which will complement the existing roadster.
MG is also planning to break ground on a European factory soon, although the location for that hasn't yet been revealed.
