Boots leads series of new lettings and renewals at Athlone Towncentre
Athlone Towncentre has announced a series of new lettings, lease renewals and new openings to start 2026.
Boots Ireland has taken a new 10-year lease on a 3,500 square foot store on the ground floor of the midlands shopping centre.
The pharmacy-led retailer is embarking on a sizeable capital investment with the intention of opening in the second quarter.
Athlone will have two Boots stores when the outlet opens in the spring. Other anchor tenants at the facility include M&S, Next, Zara, H&M, Sports Director, River Island and JD Sports.
The letting agents for Athlone Towncentre are Bannon and Cushman & Wakefield.
Lovisa, the Australian jewellery brand, has taken an approximately 1,000 sq ft store on the ground floor, which has seen brisk business since its official opening.
Golden Discs, meanwhile, has relocated from the ground floor to a new 2,000 sq ft store on the first floor, formerly occupied by Quiz.
The An Post post office has also been relet with a new postmaster installed to offer pension withdrawals and social protection payments, driving footfall at the centre.
In addition, lease renewals have been agreed with a number of existing occupiers, including clothing brands, Regatta and Name It, both of whom have committed to new five-year terms at improved rental levels.
Furthermore, a small number of letting agreements are currently being negotiated, including food & beverage operators, offices and services, all at external units at the property.
“With this latest announcement of the new Boots store, other news leases, lettings and renewals, the outlook for Athlone Towncentre in 2026 is very positive," said James Woodhouse, asset manager at Alanis Capital.
"With record levels of retail occupancy at 98%, our ambition is to grow and sustain the popularity of this destination shopping location.
"Several elements are key. Firstly, by consistently offering a compelling and diverse mix of brands and services that make the centre a natural draw for shoppers.
"Secondly, continuing to investment in the scheme and thirdly, never forgetting that we are a driver of the local economy, contributing to the prospects of Athlone and the region.”
The centre also continues to benefit from a multi-million euro mechanical and electrical upgrade project completed in 2023, achieving its ISO50001 Certification for Energy Management during last year.
Lovisa has been doing brisk business at Athlone Towncentre since opening there recently.
Athlone Towncentre has reduced energy consumption on site by 700,000kWh, reduced its carbon emissions by over 180 tonnes and improved its BER from E1 to A3.
The site on Mardyke Street, close to the M6 Dublin-Galway motorway, opened in 2007 and is the largest shopping centre in the midlands with over 180,000 sq ft of retail space.
