Tyneside pub attack victim realised he'd been stabbed when he woke to find duvet soaked in blood
A pub customer was knifed in the chest as he left a pub by a homeless stranger who had been refused entry. The victim was stabbed in an unprovoked attack as he and his friend made their way out of the Beggar's Bridge pub, in East Boldon, South Tyneside, last September. While they were inside, Jack Gilroy had made various attempts to gain entry to the pub but was refused on a number of occasions, including because he was carrying an open can of beer, because of his appearance and because he had blood under his nostrils.During his final attempt to get in, the victim and his friend were leaving the pub and asked the female member of security who had been dealing with Gilroy is everything was ok. That prompted Gilroy to turn his attention to the man, asking who he was. When told "no one but you're obviously not getting in tonight", Gilroy adopted a "fighting stance" then struck him with a blow to the chest, which was caught on CCTV. The victim initially thought he had been punched and felt winded. However when he woke up the next morning, his duvet was covered in blood and he realised he had been stabbed in the chest with a knife. In a victim impact statement, he said he was feeling angry and on "high alert" after the attack.Gilroy, 18 at the time and 19 now, of no fixed address, who has a previous conviction for threats to kill from 2024 and was sentenced last month for possessing an air pistol and harassment, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent. He was sent to a young offenders institution for 32 months.Lorraine Mustard, defending, said Gilroy was not coping with being homeless and added: "If he could go back and change everything that happened that night, he would, but he knows he can't. This was a single blow, thankfully not resulting in serious injury."We have a dedicated newsletter for court news and crime updates. It’s free and you can sign up to receive it here.
