'Gentle soul' to be repatriated for burial near Galway home after unexpected death in Germany

A Galway man will be repatriated and buried near his home after he passed away unexpectedly in Germany last month.Gerry Duffy, from Grange, Turloughmore, died unexpectedly in Germany on 13 January.His untimely death has sparked tributes from far and wide, reports Galway Beo.Gerry has been remembered as "a gentle soul" and someone who made a home in his community in Berlin. He has also been described as a "great neighbour" who "earned the genuine concern and care of people".Gerry's friends and co-workers remembered a "kind" man, and an All-Ireland medal-winning dancer "who made people smile".Schoolmates, meanwhile, remembered him as a "lovely pupil" and someone who was "very popular".He was preceded in death by his parents Tommie and Chrissie, as well as his sister Teresa.Gerry's remains will lie in repose at Our Lady's Chapel, Lackagh on Thursday evening from 6pm, before being transferred to the Church of Our Lady of Knock, Lackagh at 7.30pm.His Funeral Mass will take place at 11.30am on Friday, 6 February, 2026 at the Church of Our Lady of Knock, Lackagh, followed by interment in Lackagh Old Cemetery.The bereaved have asked for family flowers only, with donations welcome to The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust if desired.Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.
