Ireland weather: February off to cold and wet start with Met Eireann weather warnings in place
February is off to a cold and wet start, with five counties under a weather warning for 18 hours - leading to possible flooding.A Status Yellow - Rain warning will come into effect for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Cork, and Waterford at 6pm and will remain in place until 12pm on Tuesday.Met Éireann forecasters said further heavy rain falling on saturated ground combined with high river levels and high tides will lead to localised flooding, river flooding and difficult travel conditions in these counties.Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said that rain would fall in the south this afternoon after an icy start to the day, but current models suggest less rain than initially expected to fall, but more than 20mm is still possible near the south and east coast. He wrote: "Cloud increasing from South but an icy start for some areas still below 2C. Rain will push into south later this afternoon but good news is weather models have eased back a little on the amount of rain to fall. Still over 20mm near south and east coast."Weather boffins say February will kick off with low pressure continuing to dominate, bringing further spells of rain and showers over the week.
