Northumberland makes 2026 most global travel-worthy hiking destination list 

It's no secret that the North East is home to some of the most picturesque places to go for a walk, and this week Northumberland can expect an influx of visitors after it appeared on the most global travel-worthy hiking destinations list for 2026.Spotlighted as one of the UK’s least-visited national parks, known for its Roman history, coastal beauty, rolling hills, and some of Europe’s best Dark Sky stargazing, Northumberland has been recognised as an 'unforgettable hiking destination' by AllTrails, a leading outdoor platform.Taking expertise and insights from millions of outdoor explorers, the Travel-Worthy Trails list guides travellers to eight trail-rich regions that deserve to be the heart of an entire trip. Destinations were selected for their stunning landscapes, exceptional trail experiences, travel-worthy qualities, and “bucket-list” energy."In the UK alone, AllTrails has nearly 35,000 trails to explore, but Northumberland stood out for its dramatic skies, Roman history and some of the best Dark Sky stargazing in Europe. All the while being one of the lowest visited National Parks in the UK, meaning fewer crowds than some highly visited areas." said Shelby Eagleburger, AllTrails’ Head of Data Integrity.Carly Smith, AllTrails’ Chief Marketing Officer added: "We know our community loves to discover new places on trails. These once-in-a-lifetime destinations will inspire you to plan a trip, or just get outside closer to home."Four trails in particular in Northumberland were named:Simonside and Dove Crag LoopKnown for it's lovely views of the beautiful moorland scenery, hikers pass through Criss-Cross Rock before climbing to the summit of Simonside and then continue on to the top of Dove Crag.Crag Lough and Hadrians Wall CircularOffering the most majestic views of Hadrian's Wall, the trail lets you explore Hadrian's Wall, Steel Rigg, and Crag Loch in Northumberland National Park. Journey along the northern side of Crag Lough and take in the panoramic views over the crags and gaps.The Drake Stone and Harbottle Castle CircularThis trail is brimmed with history and passes the ancient Drake Stone, a legendary spot that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the ruins of Harbottle Castle. The route passes through Harbottle village with views of the Coquet River.Housesteads to Sycamore GapA great mix of nature and historic sights can be spotted on this train from Housesteads Roman Fort, also known as Vercovicium, along Hadrian's Wall passing milecastles, and past Crag Lough to Sycamore Gap.Other global destinations on the 2026 list include: Tatra Mountain in Poland and Slovakia, the Julian Alps in Italy, Slovenia and Austria, Massif Central in France, Kluane National Park and Reserve in Canada, Margaret River in Australia, Queenstown in New Zealand and Nantahala National Forest in the United States.Our Northumberland Live newsletter is free.
