Thousands of Northern Ireland primary pupils receive transfer test results on Saturday
Thousands of children in Northern Ireland received their ‘transfer test’ results online on Saturday.The Schools’ Entrance Assessment Group (SEAG) test took place in November 2025 and consisted of two papers sat on two separate Saturdays.Chair of SEAG, Deborah McLaughlin wished pupils “every success” as results were released. “We would also like to thank Primary 7 parents for their support and acknowledge the commitment of the staff in the 63 post-primary schools who help run the SEAG test Entrance Assessment,” she said.Tasha McCann with her daughter Mia from north Belfast who received her SEAG test results on Saturday. PICTURE: COLM LENAGHAN What was on the test?Each one-hour paper consisted of 56 questions on English and mathematics, which were presented as a mixture of multiple choice and open questions.Irish-language speaking students could also take the test in Gaeilge.When did the SEAG test start?For 15 years pupils sat two separate exams as part of the transfer procedure in Northern Ireland – the AQE and GL – but these were replaced by SEAG tests in 2023. All the 63 post-primary schools in Northern Ireland which use academic criteria within their year eight admissions criteria are members of SEAG.Mia Booth McCann from north Belfast who was delighted with her SEAG test results on Saturday, which she received online. A team are in place to respond to email queries on Saturday, who can be contacted via admin@seagni.co.uk.What happens next:The Education Authority’s post-primary admissions portal will open on Tuesday, January 27 which will allow parents to select their preferred school for their child.Parents can submit their applications until Thursday, February 19 at noon and will be notified of the outcome on Saturday, May 9.There will be a deadline for those wanting to appeal a school’s admission’s decision with their window of opportunity running from May 12 to May 21.
