Candlelit romance could lead to disaster

A process safety consultant has warned of the dangers posed by common romantic gifts and decorations ahead of St Dwynwen’s Day, celebrated on January as a Welsh equivalent of Valentine’s Day. Dr Dina Deifalla, operations manager at Sigma HSE, said: "Romantic celebrations often involve candles, fairy lights, and electronic gifts that can all pose fire hazards if not used correctly." "What many don't realise is that the combination of these items with common decorations can create dangerous situations." Candlelit settings are particularly risky, with candles accounting for about 12 per cent of fires involving consumer products in the home. Dr Deifalla said: "When using candles, always keep them away from flammable materials such as cards, fabric decorations or wrapping paper." Electronic gifts also pose a risk. Dr Deifalla said: "We've seen a noticeable rise in fires caused by battery chargers since 2014, including those associated with faulty electronic devices." For more information: sigma-hse.com/
