Peter Schmeichel reveals his ‘dream’ replacements for Ruben Amorim at Man Utd

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel says it would be his ‘dream’ for both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick to join Darren Fletcher in the dugout until the end of the season.
The Red Devils decided to call time on Ruben Amorim’s tumultuous 14-month tenure at the start of the week and the search to find a replacement is ongoing behind the scenes.
Amorim appeared to pave the way for his impending as he took aim at United’s board in an explosive attack following the side’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, in which he emphasised his desire to be ‘manager’ and ‘not just a coach’.
The Portuguese also suggested he would be prepared to walk away from Old Trafford when his contract expired at the end of the 2026/27 season – a decision that was ultimately taken out of his hands.
In the intervening days, a host of high-profile managers have been linked as possible candidates to fill the vacant position, from Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner to ex-England manager Gareth Southgate.
United intend to turn to an interim solution for the time being, though, with Solskjaer and Carrick both in talks to return to the Theatre of Dreams while Fletcher leads the squad as caretaker.
Carrick, who worked on the coaching staff under both Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer at United, has been out of a job since being sacked by Middlesbrough last summer.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Schmeichel encouraged United to hire all three candidates at once, suggesting the ‘dream team’ could help bring back some stability.
‘We are Manchester United and there aren’t that many Manchester United people back at the club to actually drive it in the direction that Manchester United should be driven at,’ Schmeichel said.
‘It pleases me that the three of them [Fletcher, Solskjaer and Carrick] are mentioned.
‘I mean, it’s a dream, for me, it’s a dream team if they could get all three to see out the rest of the season.’

United were held to a 2-2 draw in Fletcher’s first match in charge away to Burnley, with Jaidon Anthony’s stunning second-half strike denying the Scot a perfect start at Turf Moor.
But Schmeichel is a great admirer of Fletcher and believes it is important that an individual with United ‘DNA’ is back in the dugout during a period of uncertainty and turbulence.
‘He is a true servant to the club,’ the 1999 treble hero said of Fletcher.
‘He knows the club inside out, he’s won five Premier League titles with them, he’s got the DNA of Manchester United running through his blood.

‘I think that is important right now because we’ve been through a period with a coach [Amorim] who didn’t want to play the way that Manchester United is supposed to play.

‘We’ve been through a period of quite a lot of managers and only one manager by the way, since Sir Alex Ferguson, had more than 100 games which is a staggering stat for me.
‘We’ve been through a period where it hasn’t worked, with big, strong-name managers come in with their systems and their ideas and it hasn’t worked.’
According to Schmeichel, the trio of Fletcher, Solskjaer and Carrick would be able to drive United back to where a club of such stature is ‘supposed to be’.
‘I like the idea that, at least for the next four months, the actual football will be run by people who have been there as players, have good qualities as coaches and know what Manchester United is supposed to be,’ he added.
