Bringing Festive Cheer to Rugby’s Seriously Injured Heroes
These words from seriously injured player Niall McCool capture just how much the IRFU Charitable Trust Christmas Hamper means to his family.
Hearing Niall, his wife Pamela, and their daughters talk about the hamper, you can feel the joy and sparkle it brings to their Christmas each year.
Special thanks to Aldi for once again sponsoring this cherished tradition.
This year’s hamper is packed with festive favourites: Aldi treats including wines and spirits, mince pies, Christmas pudding and chutneys; a signed copy of Conor Murray’s book “Cloud Nine”; beautifully scented Brooke & Shoals Christmas candles; a Blue Book voucher; a luxurious Conscious Convert throw; and of course, the always-loved IRFU Calendar. It’s a bundle of comfort, celebration, and Christmas magic.
The late Paddy Madigan will forever be remembered for introducing the Christmas Hampers – an idea born from his deep care for the welfare of seriously injured players.
Those who knew Paddy will recall his warmth, humour, and unwavering dedication to the Trust.
He wanted the hampers to bring something special to each family at Christmastime, a moment they could unwrap and enjoy together.
Hearing the joy they still bring today, Paddy’s legacy shines brighter than ever. Thank you, Paddy – your spirit lives on in every ribbon, treat and smile.
As Christmas approaches, the IRFU Charitable Trust extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported the Trust this year.
Your generosity, compassion, and kindness make a real difference to our seriously injured players and their families. Without your ongoing support, we could not continue this vital work.
As Gordon D’Arcy so beautifully said: “When you meet a seriously injured player, and you see what they deal with on a daily basis, on an hourly basis, every minute – that’s truly adversity.
“And to see them come through that, to see them deal with it effortlessly, with such composure, is truly inspiring. To me that’s what real heroes are.”
Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful, healthy New Year.
