Sadness as popular Newport store announces closure after 47 years
Beechwood Bed & Furniture Centre has been part of the city’s community for nearly five decades.
After 47 years in business, the furniture and homeware store announced it would close yesterday (December 22).
In an emotional post on Facebook, representatives for the business wrote:
“After 47 years… we will be saying goodbye, but not quite yet. Today’s photo captures a moment we never thought we would never be sharing. After four decades of serving our community, Beechwood Beds & Mattresses will be closing our doors in early 2026. This decision hasn’t been easy and we want to sincerely thank every customer who has supported us, recommended us and trusted us with their homes over the last 47 years.
“If you’ve ever shopped with us, or have been meaning to, now is the time. Come in, grab a bargain and help us close this chapter the only way we know how, by looking after our customers until the very end. Thank you for 47 unforgettable years.”

The business has announced a huge “Closing Down Forever” sale with discounts of up to 70%, starting on 29th December.
Online reaction to the stores closure has been huge.
Julie Evans said: “Omg, I read recently how your parents began the shop, and how well done, that family were still running it. This is so sad.”
Shona Ford: “Sorry to read this Paul. You've done a great job keeping the family business going. It's a tough world for small independent businesses. Good luck in your next chapter.”
Joan Fothergill wrote: “I bought bedroom furniture off you at least 35 years ago, and it's still in use and looking good. Good luck in your future.”
The reason behind the business’s closure remains unknown.
