Serious crimes take a dive as CSO drops yearly statistics

Murder and most other serious crimes have decreased in the past year, according to the Central Statistics Office. The CSO released its annual crime figures on Monday morning, covering the 12 months up to the end of September 2025. This was a marginal increase of 1% compared to the year before. The number of male victims rose by 4% to 3,870, while the number of female victims fell by 4% to 2,473. The CSO said: ‘Looking at the overall profile of victims when the incident occurred, those victims aged 45-59 years increased by 8% over the year and those aged 30-44 years increased by 3%. The number of victims in the other age groups fell with the largest decreases being for those aged 60 years or more (-6%) and those aged 18-29 years (-5%). Pic: Shutterstock ‘The trend among male victims reflected the overall trend, even if the percentage changes were different in magnitude. Male victims aged 45-59 rose by 12% and those aged 30-44 years increased by 8%. However, there were decreases in the number of victims in the 18-29 years and 60 years or over categories. ‘Among female victims, the number of victims fell in all but the 45-59 age group, which rose by 2%. Among the other age groups, the number of victims aged 60 years or more was down 11% and there was a 10% decrease in victims under 18 years of age.’ According to the CSO, this year’s figures were extended to include crime incidents for speeding and dangerous or careless driving and motorway offences. Meanwhile, over the past four years, the CSO has recorded significant changes in some categories. From 2022 to 2025, thefts are up by 18% and weapons-and-explosives offences have risen by 16%.  However, over the same period, kidnapping offences have dropped by 21%.
