Prosecutors on Thursday demanded that a 45-year-old man charged with fatally shooting former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022 be sentenced to life in prison, according to media reports.Tetsuya Yamagami is standing trial for murder and other charges at the Nara District Court. He has admitted to the assassination, saying a grudge he had against the Unification Church, which his mother is an ardent follower of, motivated him to murder the influential politician, whom he regarded as an ally to the group.On July 8, 2022, the defendant approached Abe, who was stumping for a Liberal Democratic Party candidate in the city of Nara, with a homemade gun, firing twice from behind. Abe died from blood loss.
