KHRN: Iran executes woman for murder-related charges in Orumiyeh

Sedigheh Ghorbani, a woman who was sentenced to death on charges of “premeditated murder”, has been executed at Orumiyeh Central Prison. The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has learned that Ghorbani, 29, was transferred to solitary confinement on 11 December in preparation for her execution, and was executed in the early hours of the following day. She had previously been sentenced to death under Iran’s “retribution in kind” (qisas) law for “premeditated murder”. The execution was confirmed by Nasser Atbati, Head of the Judiciary of West Azerbaijan Province, who said: “In 2023, a four-year-old girl from Orumiyeh was killed by her stepmother in an incident that deeply wounded public sentiment. The case was examined in accordance with the law, and following the issuance of an indictment by the prosecutor’s office, an initial verdict was handed down by Branch One of the Criminal Court and subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court.” Ghorbani was arrested in January 2024 on charges of murdering Ava Ghahremani, her husband’s child, and was subsequently sentenced to death. She was from the Kotoul area of Khoy in West Azerbaijan Province and lived in the village of Gog Tappeh in Orumiyeh.
