Russia-Ukraine war live updates: Lavrov issues new warning on NATO troops
The new national security strategy published by the White House, one that rocked U.S. allies with its sharp criticism and pleased the Kremlin for its policy to end NATO's expansion, was a shorter unclassified form of the full version, according to Defense One, which reported that it had reviewed the complete document. In that expanded version, per Defense One, the U.S. says it should work to pull Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Poland "away from the [European Union]," and also "support parties, movements, and intellectual and cultural figures who seek sovereignty and preservation/restoration of traditional European ways of life…while remaining pro-American."There is also a radical rethinking of the world order in the larger document. The White House seeks to create a “Core 5,” or C5, as a rival to the wealthy and democratic G7, Defense One reported. This would include the U.S., China, Russia, India, and Japan, and hold regular summits on particular themes, with priorities today being Middle East security and normalizing Israel-Saudi relations. And the U.S., while maintaining its global leadership, is no longer seeking hegemony—long the goal of Russia and China, who say the world is now multipolar. “Hegemony is the wrong thing to want and it wasn’t achievable,” the document says, per the report, while caveating that neither Russia nor China should be allowed to supplant the U.S. as the global leader. And it will look beyond allied liberal democracies for its partner "regional champions". “We will reward and encourage the region’s governments, political parties, and movements broadly aligned with our principles and strategy,” the document says. “But we must not overlook governments with different outlooks with whom we nonetheless share interests and who want to work with us.”
