Santa Rosa, CA - A Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office helicopter helped authorities track down and arrest a driver who ran from police in Santa Rosa Friday.The driver initially sped away from a Santa Rosa Police Department officer attempting to pull the car over at 4:50 p.m. The sheriff’s office helicopter responded and found the car driving near Santa Rosa Avenue and Highway 12.“Despite no ground units actively pursuing it at the time, the vehicle continued driving recklessly,” the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said. “A nearby Deputy spotted the vehicle, which again attempted to flee, prompting the Deputy to initiate a pursuit.”The law enforcement helicopter continued to follow overhead, relaying updates to pursuing law enforcement. Helicopter footage of the pursuit shows the car hit a guardrail along a Highway 101 interchange before the driver pulled over near the Baker Avenue off-ramp.“Deputies conducted a high-risk stop and detained the vehicle’s occupants one at a time,” the sheriff’s office said. “During the stop, [the helicopter] observed a passenger throw an object from the vehicle using its thermal imaging system. Deputies were later directed to the item, which was identified as a cellphone.”Inside the car, deputies found a “large amount” of stolen mail, the sheriff’s office said. All four people inside the car were booked into the Sonoma County Jail for various criminal charges.
