Review – Absolute Wonder Woman #14: My Enemy, Myself
Absolute Wonder Woman cover, via DC Comics.
Ray – 10/10
Ray: Even when on a break arc, this title remains one of the best of the Absolute line – and so far above the quality of most books on the stands it’s not even funny. Fresh off her trials in the labyrinth, Diana found herself facing off against a new villain, a mysterious being made of lightning who moved faster than she could track it and wreaked havoc around the world. But as Diana finally confronted it, she made a horrific discovery – the creature was bound to her, seemingly acting as an opposite number, and the only way she could possibly defeat it permanently was to remove herself from the world. But before she can decide her next move, another threat emerges – in the form of Zatanna, who astral-projects from her cell in Veronica Cale’s headquarters to face off against Diana, and cast a spell that might come back to haunt Wonder Woman in a big way. This character’s going to be a fan favorite, I can already tell.

But after concluding that, no, she’s not simply going to accept that she needs to die to eliminate this threat, Diana finds another way. There’s a great speech by Etta about how Diana hasn’t unbalanced the world, she’s rebalanced it and sometimes things need to be shaken up. And so Diana descends into the Earth, seeking help from the goddess Gaia herself. And let me tell you, this is one of the best visual scenes in the entire series so far – and this is a series typically drawn by Hayden Sherman, so that’s a very high bar to match. The depiction of Gaia is truly epic, and the brackish underworld Diana battles her way through is incredibly intense. In the end, Diana essentially has a debate with a being older than humanity, and wins, and that’s just the kind of hero she is. This is a fantastic series and even the smaller-scale adventures are huge – but next up, we’ve got the first crossover in the Absolute Universe.
