‘Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities’ Gets Hopeful Season 2 Update

Picture: Netflix If you can quite believe it, it was three years ago that Guillermo del Toro bought his Emmy-winning horror anthology series to Netflix, and since then, there’s been little word about whether the series could ever return. While the creator is tied to Netflix for multiple other projects, including the recently released Frankenstein, whether Cabinet of Curiosities would be back for future episodes has never been addressed.  For those who missed it, the show remains one of the hidden gems within the Netflix library. The show works like a guided tour. Del Toro appears at the start of each episode to introduce a unique tale, collaborating with a different filmmaker.  Upon its October 2022 release across several episode drops, the show spent three weeks in the global top 10s, garnering 14.1M views. From 2023 through mid-2025, the show has picked up an additional 94.6M hours watched and 12.5M views. Officially, Netflix has never addressed whether the series would be returning. Still, given the length of time that’s passed and the fact that GDT has been working on other projects, it’s been assumed that, while the door isn’t entirely closed, it’s definitely not a priority for more episodes with the creator having moved his focus over to Frankenstein, a movie that’s scored well critically and has received universal audience acclaim.  Guillermo himself has signalled he’d be open to doing more, but has consistently hinted that the series was a huge undertaking. In late 2022, Guillermo del Toro was asked directly by Collider whether the show would come back. “It is a very mysterious process to get the yes or the no [referring to a renewal]. Either way is good news for me because producing eight features in one year was really, really difficult. So, you know, I would love to provide another season to get some really interesting people behind the camera protected and cherished,” later adding, “I know it would be very difficult. So anyway, if they say yes, we’ll make the effort and do it.” Guillermo del Toro also spoke in late 2022 about the directors he’d want to see in a second season.  Picture Credit: Netflix Now, all these years later, we got the opportunity to speak to Dennis Berardi, who has frequently collaborated with Guillermo del Toro, including on Frankenstein and Cabinet of Curiosities.  We asked if there had been movement on a second season, and Berardi told us, “He talks about it every once in a while, but I don’t know the answer. I think he might like to do another one, but I have no idea. I know he’s writing a couple of new movies right now, and he’s got, I think, 10 projects that he’s considering. I just don’t know. Guillermo told me that he’s really only looking to do projects where he is breaking new ground or something that he’s afraid of. I think the chances are it might not be on the hit parade. He’s looking for, to use his expression, something that maybe gets him out of his comfort zone.”   What’s Guillermo del Toro working on next? The only currently announced project Guillermo del Toro has with Netflix is a stop-motion adaptation of The Buried Giant, but it’s unclear whether it’s in production. That was first announced to be in development in 2023. Speaking of stop motion, Netflix announced it was teaming up with him and GOBELINS Paris to cofound a new studio.  Guillermo is also producing a new movie based on his book/audiobook series The Boy in the Iron Box, with David Prior directing. For those unfamiliar, Prior worked on Cabinet of Curiosities, directing episode 3, The Autopsy.  While we’ve heard of some other stuff that is or has been bubbling away behind the scenes, we’ll just have to wait and see what’s next from the famed creator.  Are you hoping that Cabinet of Curiosities gets a season 2?
