On the big screen, video game adaptations have become big box office hits in recent years. The Super Mario Bros. Movie made over $1.3 billion, becoming the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. Meanwhile, Five Nights at Freddy's made $297 million to become 2023's highest-grossing horror film. In 2025, A Minecraft Movie made $955 million, ranking as this year's second-highest-grossing Hollywood release. While these types of family-friendly tentpoles tend to dominate the box office, more adult-oriented video game movies often fly under the radar in theaters, but end up performing well on streaming platforms.

Until Dawn is now a Netflix streaming hit. Based on the 2015 video game, the survival horror film follows a group of friends trapped in a secluded area and caught in a time loop, where a mysterious foe hunts and kills them in increasingly gruesome ways, and their only way to make it out alive is to survive until dawn. Directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!), with a script written by Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler, Until Dawn's cast includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A'zion, Ji-young Yoo, and Belmont Cameli as the group of friends. Maia Mitchell and Lotta Losten also star, while Peter Stormare reprises his role from the video game as psychologist Dr. Hill.
