No stewards' inquiry for Kildare driver's excuse after being caught speeding
Gardaí in Kildare nabbed a speeding driver who said that the only reason he was speeding was because he was late for the Galway Races.
While conducting a speed check in Milltown, Co Kildare — a 60km/h zone — Gardaí detected a vehicle that was dangerously overtaking on a continuous white line, while driving at speeds in excess of 100km/h.
When stopped, the driver of the car said that he was ‘late for the Galway Races,’ and tried pleading his case with Gardaí, saying that he ‘had never been in trouble before’ and asked the Gardaí if he could be ‘let off.’

Gardaí joked that there was ‘no stewards inquiry required on this occasion’ and that the motorist was given a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice of €240 as well as three penalty points.
Gardaí also warned people not to drive at excessive speeds and dangerously overtake, joking that people should leave the racing to the horses.
‘Driving like this puts lives at risk. Excessive speed and dangerous overtaking are a recipe for serious — even fatal — collisions,’ Gardaí wrote on their Facebook page.
‘Leave the racing to the horses. Stay safe.’
