Off-duty police officer among five dead after shooting at New York office
Five people, including the suspect, have died after a shooting at an office building in New York City.
The attack occurred on Monday evening at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan which houses the office of the Consulate General of Ireland, as well as the headquarters of the investment firm Blackstone and the National Football League (NFL).
The suspect has been identified as a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, named by police as Shane Devon Tamura.

New York’s Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that Tamura had a ‘documented mental health history’ but his motive for the attack is as yet unknown.
Ms Tisch said surveillance footage showed Tamura getting out of a black BMW before walking towards the building while carrying an M4 rifle.
She said the footage showed him entering the building’s lobby before turning right and opening fire on the police officer.

Commissioner Tisch continues, he then shoots a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeds through the lobby, spraying it with gunfire,’
‘He makes his way to the elevators where he shoots a security guard who was taking cover behind a security desk.’
Its understood that he calmly waited for an elevator and when the doors opened, he allowed a woman to walk past him unharmed from the elevator, while he then travelled to the 33rd floor of the building where he opened fire again, killing another victim.

The police officer who died has been identified as Didarul Islam, a married man, and father of two young boys, whose wife is pregnant with their 3rd child.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has paid tribute to him on X, saying, ‘He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today’.
Police say that as well as those killed in the attack, a man was seriously wounded and remains in a critical condition in hospital.
