New EV sales jump almost 30% in first half of year
Sales of new electric vehicles jumped almost 30% in the first half of the year when compared to the same time last year.
New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that 13,102 new EVs were licensed during the six month period, up from 10,344 the same time in 2024.
21,424 new petrol cars were licensed between January and June, down 15% on the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the number of new diesel cars licensed decreased by 23% to 13,439.
This means the combined share of petrol and diesel cars among new private cars licensed during the six month period has fallen from 56% last year to 44%.
In June alone, 1,225 new EVs were licensed, up 38% on the same month last year.
This saw the share of EVs among new private cars from January to June rise to 17% compared to 14% in the same period of 2024.
Over 600 new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles were licensed in June, up 110% on the same month last year.
This brings the share of such vehicles among new private cars from 9% to 15%.
Today's data shows that Volkswagen was the most popular make of new private car licensed in June at 833 vehicles.
This was followed by Škoda, Hyundai, Tesla, and Toyota. Together, these five makes represented 54% of all new private cars licensed in June.
The most popular brand of new electric car was the Tesla Model 3, followed by Tesla Model Y, and Hyundai Inster.
