Thousands of students have flooded the streets of Lisbon, Portugal, as anger grows over government plans to increase university tuition fees from the 2027–2028 academic year. The protests could mark another flashpoint in Europe's growing cost-of-living crisis, with young people warning that rising education costs and soaring rents are putting their futures at risk.
Students marched through Lisbon chanting slogans such as “To study is to protest!” as they demanded that the government maintain the tuition fee freeze in place since 2020. Protesters say a single room in Lisbon can cost more than €600 a month, making it increasingly difficult for students to afford higher education.
