250K + Protesters Turn France Into Battlefield, Brutal Street Clashes; Macron Watches From Afar
France’s growing student protest movement has erupted into fresh clashes with riot police as more than a quarter of a million people demonstrated nationwide demanding better-funded schools and improved conditions. Government figures put Tuesday’s turnout at 256,000, including around 56,000 in Paris. Protesters threw objects and fireworks during clashes in the capital, while police responded with tear gas. The unrest follows more than two weeks of school blockades and class boycotts over complaints including staff shortages, inadequate facilities and demanding schedules. More than 6,100 arrests have been made since the movement began, mostly involving minors. Police tactics are also under growing scrutiny after a 15-year-old boy lost a hand in an incident involving a stun grenade. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez says police responses have been proportionate in “almost all cases,” arguing that some demonstrations have descended into riots.
