US farmers squeezed by trade war, losing faith in Trump

AI Article: Perplexity Google Lens
American farmers say they are losing patience with President Donald Trump's trade war with China, as rising diesel and fertiliser costs squeeze margins and falling exports push more farms into bankruptcy.

Nearly 70 percent of rural America voted for Trump, but his approval is now negative in nine of the country's ten biggest farm states, including Minnesota, where farmer Sam Ziegler's family has farmed since 1918. Ziegler, who voted for Trump in 2016, says he is now asking harder questions about whether the administration truly supports rural America.

Farmers say they want trade, not aid, and open markets rather than tariffs that hit US farm sales to China.

Al Jazeera's Heidi Zhou-Castro reports from Good Thunder, Minnesota.
