Volkswagen Dropped From Euro Stoxx 50 As German Auto Jobs Come Under Threat
Volkswagen’s troubles are deepening. After issuing a profit warning and being dropped from the Euro Stoxx 50, the German auto giant is pushing ahead with plans to cut 100,000 jobs by the end of the decade.
Around 180,000 workers joined nationwide protests as unions fought to protect the 35-hour working week. Germany’s auto industry is battling rising electric-vehicle production costs, weak demand, and intense competition from China.
With German manufacturing costs far higher than in Japan and China, can job cuts and longer working hours save the industry?
