Sutcliffe promises to double supportive housing rate

Incumbent mayoral candidate Mark Sutcliffe has unveiled a plan to end homelessness in Ottawa by building 10,000 more affordable homes, but his opponents remain unconvinced. CTV's Austin Lee reports that Sutcliffe is promising to double the rate of supportive housing to build 650 units over the next five years, though he could not provide a specific timeline for ending homelessness. Mayoral candidate Jeff Leiper criticized the incumbent, stating that homelessness has doubled under Sutcliffe's watch, while candidate Neil Saravanamuttoo proposed a “housing first” approach using shipping container tiny homes. Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa executive director Kaite Burkholder Harris says ending the crisis requires local enablers and a recognition that the private sector cannot do it alone.
