New reports reveal that the UK has spent £6.5 million on a scheme offering financial incentives to encourage certain foreign national offenders to leave Britain. The programme has reignited fierce debate over immigration policy, public spending, and whether taxpayer money should be used in this way.

Former Cabinet Office Chief Economist Jonathan Portes argues the controversy is overblown, describing it as "a bit of a non-story" and suggesting that, if anything, the voluntary returns programme should be expanded.
