Russell revisits the biblical story of Joseph being betrayed by his brothers, stripped of his robe and thrown into an empty cistern. But rather than treating the well simply as a place of imprisonment, he explores it as something much deeper — a symbolic death, or even a kind of crucifixion, where Joseph’s old identity dies and the person who eventually emerges is fundamentally changed.
