Call-up for Elding as U21 squad named for play-offs

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad for the upcoming European Championship play-off against Finland includes debutant Owen Elding, who earned his first senior cap in the last international window. Elding, who was named Young Player of the Year while with Sligo Rovers during the 2005 season, signed for Scottish Premiership side Hibernian in January. And while the Edinburgh side have struggled so far this term, the 20-year-old has produced some eye-catching performances and has five goals to his name so far. Former Dundalk striker Gbemi Arubi returns to squad having broken into the Burton Albion first team and Bromley's Owen Mason earns another call-up having been ruled out in the September/October qualifiers through injury. Ireland face the Finns over two legs and will be away from home first on Friday, 13 November (kick-off 4.15pm Irish time) in the city of Tampere. The return leg will take place at the Munster FA Turner's Cross Stadium in Cork on Tuesday, 17 November (kick-off 5.45pm). Jim Crawford's charges secured their place in the play-offs with a four-game winning streak that saw them beat European Champions England 3-1 in their final group game.
