After a year of horror cinema that’s seen Gen Z filmmakers emerge as major talents, Bleecker Street is taking it old school — as in, 19th-century old school. The distributor has released the full trailer for “Victorian Psycho,” their latest horror movie coming out this fall.
Based on the 2025 horror novel by Virginia Feito, “Victorian Psycho” stars scream queen Maika Monroe — known for her roles in “It Follows” and “Longlegs” — as Winifred Notty, an eccentric young woman in Victorian England who works as a governess for wealthy families. As the film begins, she is starting her new assignment, teaching the young children of Mr. and Mrs. Pounds (Jason Isaacs and Ruth Wilson) at the couple’s Yorkshire estate.
As she adjusts to her work teaching Andrew (“Hamnet” breakout Jacobi Jupe) and Drusilla (Evie Templeton), staff around the sprawling manor disappear, and nurse Ms. Lamb (Thomasin McKenzie) soon begins to suspect Winifred is responsible. The accusations only make Winifred, who has secretly been dealing with a rapidly fraying psyche, more paranoid, leading to bloody and dangerous consequences. The film is the third feature from director Zachary Wigon, who previously made “The Heart Machine” and “Sanctuary.” Feito wrote the script, adapting her own work
“Victorian Psycho” first premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in May, in the Un Certain Regard competition. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics at the fest. IndieWire’s Kate Erbland gave the film a “B,” praising Monroe’s performance by writing that her “Winifred practically vibrates with the need to hold things together. It does not always work for her, but it is nearly always funny, deliciously and dementedly so.” However, she also criticized some of the changes made to the original novel and the toning down of its more extreme content, saying that “By tempering her impulses and inner monologue, the film ends with less of the giddy gore that makes the rest of it such a dark treat. Dare we say it? We would have loved for this one to go full, ahem, boar.”
Bleecker Street will release “Victorian Psycho” in theaters September 25. Watch the full trailer below.
