Attendance is usually the first routine of a school day, a roll call, a chorus of "Present, ma'am," and lessons begin.
But in one Delhi classroom, that familiar ritual has been transformed into a hands-on activity that is not only winning hearts online but also teaching children a lesson in responsibility before the first class even starts.
A video shared by Sumi has gone viral for showing a teacher's creative self-attendance system. Shared with the caption, "My little ones, taking charge," the clip captures students enthusiastically marking their own attendance using a handmade board instead of waiting for the teacher to call out their names.
The video begins with the teacher entering the classroom, followed by the children, who head straight towards a colourful DIY attendance board mounted on the wall. Attached to the board are small matchboxes, each labelled with the face of a student.
Inside every matchbox are two letters: 'A' for absent and 'P' for present. As each child walks into the classroom, they slide open their own matchbox to reveal the letter 'P', quietly marking themselves present before taking their seats.

What could have been another mundane classroom task becomes an interactive exercise that encourages accountability, independence and participation. Rather than simply responding to their names, the children become active participants in a routine that belongs to them.
The heartwarming idea has resonated with thousands online, with many praising the teacher for turning a daily chore into a meaningful learning experience.
