I’ve visited 47 of the 50 United States since becoming a flight attendant in 2022. My job has taught me that you don’t have to leave the country to experience the beauty, charm, and excitement of visiting a new destination.
Maybe you’ve been saving up for that major international extravaganza for years now. But I need you to know that some travel gems could be just a short drive or flight away – no passport required.
These 11 domestic layovers left me wanting to return. Some of them really surprised me and blew my expectations out of the water. So whether you plan to stay a while or only have a day to explore between flights, these U.S. cities and towns deserve your attention.
Whitefish, MOWhitefish is a small Montana town situated beside Whitefish Lake, 15 minutes from Glacier National Park. The charming downtown area boasts cozy coffee shops and cafes, boutique shops, and rustic bars. There are plenty of upscale establishments mixed in with the laid-back businesses, making it desirable for every type of traveler.
My FCA layover during the fall has remained the best domestic layover of my career. The red, orange, and yellow aspens reflecting off the crystal-clear lake made for a picture-perfect morning walk.
I later explored the town and was delighted by how kindly the locals treated me. If you desire a mountain town getaway, Whitefish is the best spot.
Portland, MEWelcome to my favorite East Coast town. Portland, Maine, is a quaint and colorful destination filled with beautiful lighthouses, adorable shops, and world-famous lobster rolls. I spent my 31-hour layover here exploring art galleries, humble shops, and craft breweries along the cobblestone streets.
Portland is renowned for its lighthouses, my favorite of which is the Portland Head Light, just a short drive outside of town. This gorgeous seaside structure is a work of art and cannot be missed when you visit PWM. Grab a lobster roll and a local beer, and enjoy one of the gems of New England.
Eugene, ORThis happening college town, situated on the Willamette River, is one of my favorite places to explore by bike. The riverside paths in Eugene lead to beautiful rose gardens, and you can easily traverse the downtown area and the University of Oregon campus in a couple of hours on two wheels.
Check out some of the film sites from National Lampoon’s Animal House, like the one pictured above. Then sip local craft beer at charming breweries. My favorite is McMenamins High Street Brewery & Cafe, built in a beautiful, renovated home.
Graduate by Hilton is one of my all-time favorite stays, not just on a layover! They provide free bikes to use for the day, and the rooms are packed with personality. Stay here for access to the best Eugene has to offer.

Santa Barbara, CA
Boat views from the Harbor Walk
Santa Barbara is a small city just an hour north of Los Angeles, and it’s one of the most beautiful seaside towns I’ve ever visited.
Take a stroll along the boardwalk and peruse boutique shops with a local coffee in hand. The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center is located right on Stearns Wharf, my favorite place to go shopping and take in the coastal views.
Check out the UC Santa Barbara campus for a few hours. It’s easily one of the prettiest universities I’ve ever visited, and the surrounding college town streets are hopping with activity,
Reno, NVCasinos surrounded by beautiful nature? What more could anyone ask for? Reno is a much more manageable gambling city than Nevada’s bustling Las Vegas, and it’s situated on a gorgeous section of the Truckee River. It really lives up to its nickname of “the biggest little city in the world.”
Go on a hike, explore the Riverwalk District shops, bars, and cafes, then enjoy a night of rolling the dice at one of the many casinos downtown. It’s only a 45-minute drive from Lake Tahoe. Spend a long weekend balancing time at the casinos and one of the most beautiful lakes in the country.
Jacksonville, FL
My friend Ciara and her dog Sunny at Neptune Beach
I never thought I’d add any place in Florida to a favorites list (sorry, Floridians, it’s just too humid). But 19 hours in Jacksonville changed my mind.
The Five Points area is great for shopping and dining, with vintage shops and a wide variety of cuisines. Head just 30 minutes east to the Atlantic. Florida beaches are so different from what I’m used to on the West Coast in LA. When my best friend took me to nearby Neptune Beach, I was smitten with the laid-back vibes and colorful neighborhoods.
While I don’t recommend visiting during the summer, Jacksonville offers a great outdoor environment for those seeking beach days and brewery hopping downtown. Even a short trip will be memorable!

Chicago, ILMy recent 33-hour layover in Chicago convinced me that it just might be the best big city in America. Stunning architecture, entertainment of every kind, and award-winning restaurants abound. I told Lea Rose, our local Chicagoan Managing Editor, that I felt like I was in a utopia!
My quick layovers have only given me a taste of the many reasons I intend to return to get a real feel for it all. But even one day in Chicago is worth the trip. The people are so friendly, the food is fantastic, and the bean is just as shiny as it looks in photos. Visit during the summer for ideal weather.

Nashville, TN
Me singing karaoke at one of the bars on Whiskey Row
If Whiskey Row sounds like your cup of tea (er… alcohol??), then Nashville is right up your alley. The downtown area is walkable and hopping with live music, country bars, and Southern-comfort eateries. The karaoke bars sold me immediately.
There’s so much more to Nashville than crazy partying, though, especially the city’s pivotal role in country music history. Whether you’re visiting for a bachelor/bachelorette party or just have a quick night to explore, you’ll find plenty to love about this lively Tennessee gem.

San Diego, CAThis is every Arizonan’s favorite Southern California city. The San Diego airport (SAN) is perfectly situated right next to Downtown San Diego and the ocean beaches. You can even get to beautiful Coronado Island within a 15-minute drive.
Spend some time by the water, shop around the Seaport Village, and dine at some of the best restaurants and breweries in the city within a stone’s throw of the airport. You can do a lot in one day in San Diego, thanks to the ideal location and buzzing atmosphere of this lovely city.

Washington D.C.Washington D.C. has no shortage of exciting sites and attractions. From the White House to the museums and monuments, you’ll never be bored during a stay in our nation’s capital. I recommend taking a Potomac cruise to make the most of a fall evening, sailing past the sites.

Albuquerque, NMThis is the most unexpected spot on this list. I’d driven through Albuquerque a few times as a child, and my only real point of reference for the culture of the place was Breaking Bad (best show ever, by the way). Not the best representation, though.
My ABQ layovers introduced me to both Uptown Albuquerque and Old Town Albuquerque. Both offer great shopping and dining (green chili is a must), eclectic stores, and friendly people.
I especially love the Old Town Plaza featuring the 230-year-old San Felipe de Neri church, a shining example of the Spanish Colonial architecture that gives New Mexico its charm.
