Japan is the most life-changing destination
New research has found that holidaymakers are increasingly searching for trips that offer far more than just sun loungers and sightseeing, with the study by adventure travel company Explore Worldwide analysing more than 1,500 online comments and 447 mentions of destinations discussed in forums where travellers shared the journeys that had transformed their outlook on life.
From healing after personal challenges to embracing culture shock and discovering a fresh perspective, the findings suggest some destinations leave a lasting impact long after travellers have unpacked their suitcases.
Topping the list was Japan, praised for its unique blend of tradition and modernity.
From Tokyo's neon-lit streets and bustling late-night izakayas to Kyoto's ancient temples and the preserved districts of Kanazawa, travellers described experiences that fundamentally changed the way they viewed the world.
One Reddit user wrote: "It made me more conscious about my day-to-day living, to respect each other and to find beauty in things that others might discard."
The country's food, hospitality and deep-rooted customs were repeatedly highlighted as key reasons behind its transformative appeal.
India secured second place, with travellers describing the country as an experience that awakens every sense.
The energy of Mumbai, the historic streets of Delhi and the spiritual atmosphere of Varanasi all featured prominently in people's reflections.
One traveller said: "I absolutely fell in love with the country, the culture, the people and it massively changed the way I view the world and behave."
New Zealand ranked third, captivating visitors with its dramatic natural beauty.
From the spectacular fjords of Milford Sound to the braided rivers and mountain scenery of the Southern Alps, travellers said the country inspired a profound appreciation for the natural world.
Thailand took fourth place, earning praise for its welcoming people, vibrant culture and unforgettable culinary experiences. Visitors highlighted everything from Bangkok's bustling street food scene to peaceful evenings spent in temple courtyards in Chiang Mai.
Iceland completed the top five, with travellers repeatedly describing the Nordic nation as otherworldly. Its volcanic terrain, geysers and the spectacle of the Northern Lights left many visitors in awe.
Three European destinations featured in the top 10, with Iceland joined by Italy and Switzerland. Jordan, Nepal and Colombia also ranked highly among travellers seeking journeys with deeper meaning.
Luke Judd, adventure travel expert at Explore Worldwide, said: "We're seeing more and more travellers looking for experiences that go beyond relaxation, they want trips that challenge them, move them and leave them with a different perspective on the world.
"Japan taking the top spot is no surprise given its unique culture and the sheer variety of experiences it offers, but it's brilliant to see destinations like Jordan, Colombia and Nepal featuring so highly too. These are destinations that don't just impress you, they stay with you, and that's what meaningful travel is all about."
