Coraline Fans Need To Watch Its New Animated Successor I Am Frankelda
Fans of the iconic 2009 Coraline movie need to watch the stop-motion movie's successor when it releases on Netflix days away from now in 2026. While we're closer than ever to being two decades away from Coraline's initial theatrical debut, the movie still remains a cornerstone of the animated movie world, and a prime example of how well horror can be done while keeping a lower age rating. A huge part of this appeal lies within Coraline's art direction and tone, as the gothic ambience of the otherworldly realm Coraline finds herself within is still endlessly fascinating to revisit to this day, and no doubt inspires plenty of modern movies even long after its release, especially given the way the film has managed to age decidedly well both in its visuals and its evergreen story. As such, it's exciting to note that the next big stop-motion animated movie to hit Netflix also delves into very similar territory, both in terms of the film's format and in terms of its story, which also pits its protagonist against a surreal but striking and fascinating supernatural world. Hopefully, those who love Coraline will find their way to the film, since it seems a perfect fit for fans of the 2009 movie itself.
I Am Frankelda Already Has The Same Charm & Horror Balance That Made Movies Like Coraline & The Corpse Bride Major Movie Hit
Frankelda and Herneval looking at each other in I Am Frankelda
I Am Frankelda is a visually dazzling stop-motion animated fantasy story, already giving it one immediate parallel to Coraline, which itself is one of the most famous stop-animated films of all time. To add to these parallels, I Am Frankelda is also a story wherein its lead human protagonist finds themselves transported from the conventional world they knew to one filed with mystery and monsters, albeit through very different means. Much like Coraline, I Am Frankelda sees its protagonist become trapped in this world - with its titular lead imprisoned in order to continue to craft the nightmares that keep the denizens of the supernatural world alive - though it's worth noting that Frankelda is far more taken with this other realm than Coraline was, partly because Frankelda has a romantic subplot with the birdlike Herneval that brings her to this world.
While I Am Frankelda first released theatrically in Mexico back in October 2025, the film is now finally set to release on Netflix on June 12, meaning there's just days left before Netflix users can experience the film for themselves, and immerse themselves in another rich and unique stop-motion world.
I Am Frankelda Proves The Movie World Needs More Stop-Animated Movies

Tragically, stop-motion movies are one of the least commonly made formats of film, in no small part because of the huge undertaking that this style of filmmaking requires, since every shot has to be painstakingly set up, and most of the models involved in the production have to have numerous variants to account for things like poses and expressions.
However, it only takes watching I Am Frankelda's trailer to see why it's well worth this type of film being a more common part of the movie world. Not only is this animation style one that lets the art team's talents be fully shown off, it is also capable of creating a distinct sense of style in terms of the way in which the animation is executed as well, since this approach can create a unique kind of pacing and expressiveness. Given the lasting success and appeal of other stop-motion movies like Coraline, Isle of Dogs, ParaNorman and Kubo and the Two Strings, it's all the more exciting to know I Am Frankelda is about to become more accessible for audiences to enjoy than ever, since it can add to a rich and oftentimes underappreciated corner of the arts.
