Judgment Day for John Connors

A prisoner already serving an 11-month jail sentence has been handed a concurrent one-month term after being found guilty of abusive behaviour in Dún Laoghaire. John Connors (42), of no fixed abode, had pleaded not guilty to engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour at George’s Street Upper in the town on September 24, 2025. He also faced a charge of being intoxicated in a public place on the same date. Judge Anne Watkin heard that Connors was observed by a garda on beat patrol at around 1.45pm sitting on the ground on George’s Street Upper. The court heard that Connors was heavily intoxicated, had slurred speech and was shouting while members of the public were present in the area. Garda Lally said that when he asked Connors to stand up, the defendant repeatedly told him to “f*** off” before an arrest was made. Connors, who represented himself in court, told Dún Laoghaire District Court that he had no recollection of the incident. He told Judge Watkin: “I don’t recall any of this” – “I’m not guilty”. He said he recognised the garda from around the area but did not remember what had happened that day. The court heard that Connors has 52 previous convictions and is currently serving an 11-month prison sentence. Judge Watkin found Connors guilty of the Section 6 public order offence and imposed a one-month prison sentence to run concurrently with the sentence he is already serving. The intoxication charge was taken into consideration. Recognisance was set at €500 in the event of an appeal. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme
